Description

Are you an experienced system developer with GIS expertise who wants to lead the technical design of map systems? At SMHI, you will use your expertise to develop systems vital to society and drive progress in geodata.

About SMHI and IT Development

SMHI's operations involve collecting weather, water, and climate-related data, which we analyze and visualize to create a basis for decision-makers and citizens. Our vision is a vibrant and safer society - through reliable knowledge in weather, water, and climate.

The IT Development unit consists of approximately 50 employees in development teams responsible for the entire chain - from idea to operations. We build business-critical systems used around the clock. To meet new assignments and increased responsibility, we are now strengthening our operations with several new system developers.

At SMHI, a good work environment with a balance between work and leisure is important to contribute to employees' quality of life. The same applies in our teams, where we care about and support each other in our work.

About the Teams and the GIS Function

Maps and geographic information are a central part of SMHI's operations. This is crucial for visualizing and analyzing everything from weather forecasts to flood risks and oceanographic conditions.

As a system developer with GIS expertise, you will primarily be part of a team that needs GIS reinforcement. The team has broad technical expertise, and you work according to agile principles, taking joint responsibility for translating requirements into technical solutions. The work covers the entire development process, where teams have great freedom to choose technology based on the assignment's needs and are fully responsible for quality, delivery, and system operations.

Examples of such teams include:

  • A team handling SMHI's oceanographic data collection from buoys, ships, and satellites, including quality assurance and data distribution.
  • A team managing SMHI's portal for map data, which is used by around 50–100 internal systems daily to generate correct map data internally and externally.
  • A team generating oceanographic map data for our oceanographers, who produce various oceanographic forecasts, such as ice forecasts and coastal analyses.

You will also belong to and receive support from our GIS function, which:

  • Manages and develops SMHI's GIS toolkit (including map portals and QGIS), providing support for our development teams.
  • Supports the organization with methodological support and expert knowledge in GIS.
  • Drives environmental monitoring and development in geodata, including collaboration with other authorities.

Here, you will have the opportunity to continuously develop your and SMHI's GIS expertise, as well as working methods, through knowledge exchange, environmental monitoring, and conferences.

About the Position

We are looking for experienced system developers who want to be drivers in the development of our GIS function through environmental monitoring, method development, knowledge dissemination, and mentorship. You may also need to take on the role of solution architect, i.e., investigate and map existing system usage, and/or propose new system needs or improvements to existing system setups.

Your main tasks include:

  • Staffing development teams with your expertise in system development and GIS. This requires collaboration with end-users and enterprise architects.
  • Receiving support and developing support within the GIS function by consulting with other system developers with GIS expertise and other GIS specialists, contributing to the development of common working methods, standards, and technical solutions. This requires collaboration with support functions such as legal and enterprise architects.
  • Collaborating with other authorities to develop standards in geodata and drive best practices at SMHI.
  • As a senior system developer with GIS expertise, you also act as a mentor for other system developers.

The work is varied and involves both independent responsibility and close collaboration with colleagues. You will work on projects vital to society and develop both technically and professionally, with the possibility of eventually working in a specialist role or as a technical role model.

About You

We are looking for someone with education in system development, alternatively with experience that SMHI considers equivalent. Very good knowledge of both Swedish and English, both spoken and written.

Furthermore, we see that you have:

  • At least 10 years of experience as a system developer.
  • Several years of experience with programming languages like Python or C++, as well as Linux.
  • Experience with GIS and geodata, and at least 2 years of experience in building and developing web maps.
  • Understanding of developing stable systems, i.e., CI/CD and version control.

It is meritorious with:

  • Work experience in system development of stable and complex systems with high operational requirements.
  • Work experience with GIS tools such as Spatial databases like PostGIS, geopython, FME, QGIS.
  • Knowledge of or experience with information classification and data security.
  • Experience in web development with modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React or Angular) and Node.js.
  • Experience working according to agile methods and as a team lead.

As a person, you feel secure in your role as a system developer, enjoy working with complex problems, and have the ability to break them down and find sustainable solutions. Being able to collaborate with others while also driving your own work independently is important. You need to take initiative and responsibility both for your own work and for the team's deliveries.

With good collaboration skills, you find it easy to communicate and explain and teach others in a pedagogical way. It is important to have a service-oriented approach with a focus on delivering solutions that create value.
